Fire Emblem: Three Houses provides a strong story set in a rich world with a large cast of deep and complex characters. That is, except for the main character Byleth, who is given too much personality to be a good “self-insert” character, but too little personality to be considered a character at all. And yet they’re simultaneously the most charismatic leader in the world and Fódlan’s best therapist, literally being the difference between a world leader becoming a just and stable ruler or a sociopathic tyrant. I’m certain if you replace all of Byleth’s lines with “…” the story will be completely unchanged.
