Today’s comic was inspired by some random internet discussion I saw, where someone tried to defend modern cartoons by bringing up Regular Show, which ended back in 2017. Upon this realization, this internet commenter did an immediate 180 on their position from, “Hey, good cartoons still exist!” to “Huh, I guess I don’t know what cartoons are out nowadays, but I’m sure they’re terrible!”

I’ve been on the internet since I was way too young to be on the internet – and watching cartoons for longer than that – and it just gets tiring seeing this exact same cycle play out every few years. Back in the early 2000s, I was seeing full grown adults trash my favorite shows and waxing nostalgic on the golden days of Transformers and ThunderCats. Nowadays, those same cartoons that I clearly remember the internet trashing back then are considered the golden days of animation for today’s adults.

And y’know, I’m not even keeping up with cartoons that much anymore – I’m having trouble keeping up with most media, actually – but the last one I was really invested in was The Owl House, which I realized ended back in 2023, so I have no idea how the landscape’s changed since then. But I’m not just gonna assume nothing good has come out since.
