“Oh man, Chancellor Palpatine’s sure going to feel silly if the next Chancellor uses emergency powers to make his allies enemies of the state! Bet he never considered that possibility!”

– viral space-tweet from Alderaan

Every time the conservatives push forward some regressive legal policy, every liberal/progressive floods social media with their clever little rebukes of, “Aha, but don’t you see, you stupid Republicans? The reasoning for this law could be used against you! And there’s nothing you can do about it unless you want everyone to see you as hypocrites!”

And it’s just… no, they could definitely do something: just say, “Nuh uh.” Or hell, just ignore it, because more often than not, the left doesn’t actually agree with the basis of these legal reasonings – they would never actually fight to get them passed and they shouldn’t.

“If you’re so pro-life, then you wouldn’t mind mandating every man to get a vasectomy! Or banning Viagra!” No one actually wants these to happen – the Republicans know that, you know that, they are in no danger of having their pro-life rhetoric used against them.

“If religion in school is so important, I guess we can start every school day with an Islamic prayer?” Yeah, good luck finding enough Muslim teachers willing to risk their life pretending to indoctrinate students into Islam.

The Right does not care about looking like hypocrites, and those who keep them in power have no interest in maintaining logical or moral consistency. As long as they’re getting what they want, it doesn’t matter what means they use to get it.

If arguing that the “Moops” invaded Spain in the 8th century means the conservatives score a point against the liberals, it doesn’t matter whether or not they believe it’s actually right – the card says “Moops.”
